The End or Re-Birth of America?
This is a short-form version of the original article.
Many people fear the end of America is here.
Is this really true?
Exploring America through the lens of "psychohistory" may bring some surprising insights to light.
Get ready for a dive into one of the greatest stories of our age.
Joseph Campbell and The Hero's Journey
Campbell introduced the hero's journey as a monomyth–a cyclical pattern that most if not all, cultural and religious mythologies follow.
Like religions, nations are also built on values deeply embedded in a story.
America's Story
Let's take a look at the hero's journey of America:
• Colonization was the call to adventure
• The American Revolution was crossing the threshold
• Civil War as the descent into the abyss
• The rise of America after the triumph in WWII was the return
The Changing World Order
Macro investor, Ray Dalio suggests America is declining as the reigning empire.
His study of the past 500 years found that empires typically follow an archetypical cycle that lasts roughly 250 years.
Which means...America is on "the decline."
The Empire's Journey
• An empire's call to adventure is "the rise"
• It begins crossing the threshold when it reaches "the top"
• It descends into the abyss when it's in "the decline"
• The old order returns to a state of re-building as the "new order" emerges
Cyclical Evolution
Dalio suggests that China is the next global empire. His research indicates that China used to be a powerful empire in the past and is now rising again.
So this means that the evolutionary arc of an empire is cyclical–a continuous rise and fall.
Depth Psychology
So why does reality move in such a cyclical manner?
Building on the work of Freud and Jung, psychologist Stanislav Grof expanded the map of the unconscious.
He discovered two non-personal realms: the perinatal and the transpersonal domains of the psyche.
Through thousands of patient sessions, Grof identified recurring experiential patterns linked to the stages of birth.
He found that these experiences could be grouped into four distinct matrices, each reflecting a phase of the birth process––the Basic Perinatal Matrices (BPMs).
The Perinatal Cycle
BPM I: The amniotic state of the fetus–peace.
BPM II: Contractions occur and the fetus feels constricted–oppression.
BPM III: Painful labor begins–struggle.
BPM IV: The baby is born and the mother is re-born–creation.
A Surprising Revelation
Grof's discovery led to a deeper revelation when he began collaborating with cultural historian, Richard Tarnas.
They were shocked to discover a correlation between the astrology of the skies and the psychology of the self.
Cosmological Correlation
This remarkable discovery led Tarnas to study deep history.
He found a striking correlation between planetary alignments and world history extending centuries into the past.
This profound truth inspired the birth of the field of Archetypal Cosmology.
Tarnas found that the four outer planets: Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto correlated significantly with major epochs in world history.
From politics to fashion to financial markets––the planets are seen as archetypes, which essentially means "first principles".
Transpersonal Movement
Since the outer planets correlate to large historical cycles, they are considered to be transpersonal archetypes.
So, Tarnas and Grof integrated their research into a comprehensive framework encompassing a cycle embedded in the cosmos.
A Profound Integration
BPM I correlates with Neptune–ease and harmony.
BPM II correlates with Saturn–constriction and pain.
BPM III correlates with Pluto–a fight for survival.
BPM IV correlates with the archetype of Uranus–freedom and novelty.
A Fundamental Reality
Now that we have a sense of how energy moves, we can return to the story of America.
The previous hero's journey ended with WWII and the rise of America as a global power.
In the current cycle, we begin with the 1969 Moon Landing as a pivotal moment.
The Current Cycle
Stage 1: The Moon Landing was a call to adventure that enabled America to flourish as a peaceful global power.
Stage 2: The country crossed the threshold from known to unknown as the 9/11 terrorist attacks took place.
This leads us to our current moment...
Stage 3: It seems since 2001 America has been on a descent into the "abyss"––the BPM III/Pluto stage in which a death-rebirth struggle is being experienced.
According to Dalio, this is "the decline" stage in which high debt, large income gaps, political division, etc. arise.
250 Year Cycle
Along with Dalio, historian Sir John Glub said: "The average age of the great civilizations of the world has been 250 years. This average has not varied for 5000 years."
It is no coincidence that the planet Pluto has ~250 year orbital cycle.
Pluto Return
Pluto, the archetype of evolutionary transformation correlates to the rise and fall of empires.
Since it is America's 248th anniversary, the nation is in the midst of its "Pluto return" meaning that Pluto in the sky is now transiting over America's natal Pluto.
The Pluto return indicates a rite of passage for the nation—an initiation into the deep, dark depths of civilization.
Lingering in the depths, Pluto exposes all that has been unconsciously buried.
America is being asked to face its own shadow.
The Uranus Cycle
Along with the titanic shifts of the Pluto return, Uranus in the sky will begin transiting over the country's natal Uranus starting next year—initiating America's 4th Uranus return.
The Uranus return occurs every 84 years.
Each Uranus return coincided with a major moment in American history since the first English colony was established in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.
1. The Declaration of Independence (1776)
2. The beginning of the Civil War (1861)
3. The triumph of WWII (1944)
Although the incoming Uranus return will start to kick in next year, it will be at its peak between 2026 and 2030.
We can expect a major event to unfold towards the end of the 2020s that could reshape America's identity on the global stage.
Co-Creating the Moment
There is a famous Hermetic phrase: "As above, so below; as within, so without; as the universe, so the soul."
This means that what occurs on the personal level ripples out into the collective dimension and vice versa.
How you participate matters.
We live in an open universe—nothing is predetermined.
And astrology–despite its reputation for being deterministic–thrives in an open system.
So, America has the creative capacity to divert from a potentially catastrophic decline.
On free will and determinism, Tarnas writes: "The more accurately one understands the archetypal forces that inform and affect one’s life, the more flexibly and intelligently responsive one can be in dealing with them."
This is the power of astrology.
